Mountain Peak Elite/Premier Coach
Gold Medal Squared Lead Coach
3 Years Coaching Experience
HOME LIFE: Eric grew up in the Midwest where he spent 15 years as a Percussionist performing in ensembles of all types and sizes while also dabbling in a couple sports (mainly soccer and baseball) and spending most summer evenings behind the boat on a lake. The elder of two boys, he was successful in showing his younger brother what not to do in many of life’s adventures. While walking around in Argentina for a couple years, his family moved to Logan, UT where his dad became a professor at USU and so he returned ”home” to Cache Valley in the spring of 2004 and hasn’t wanted to leave ever since.
EDUCATION: Upon returning to Logan, he began working towards a Bachelors Degree in Spanish which he completed in 2008. After a year away exploring various options, he returned to school to complete both a Master of Science in Human Resources (‘10) and a Master of Business Administration (‘13).
VOLLEYBALL CAREER: Eric was a bit of a late-comer to the volleyball world as the sport was considered a girl’s game in Oklahoma where he spent most of his youth. While playing pick-up volleyball with some friends in college, they suggested he try out for the Men’s Club team at USU and from there, the addiction started. While competing on the Men’s Club team, Eric played as Outside and Opposite Hitter, Setter, and even Libero, though his heart has always been with setting. He continues to compete in both indoor and outdoor tournaments for post-education adults around the state.
COACHING CAREER: After a 3-year stint in the Oil and Gas sector that took him out of state, Eric returned to Logan in ’15 where he was soon recruited to coach the Men’s Club team. In addition to preparing to guide the Men’s team, he was perplexed by the lack of a Women’s Club team at Utah State and so he worked with female friends who played in the valley to start the Women’s Club team that fall. Eric led both the Men’s and Women’s club teams for the ’15-’16 and ’16-‘17 school years before passing on the torch for new leadership. Eric also began coaching younger volleyball players in the summer of ’16 where he led North Peak Volleyball’s outdoor programs and continued on in the fall/spring by coaching one of Mountain Peak’s 15U teams. During the summers, Eric works for Gold Medal Squared to run youth volleyball camps in locations across the nation.
WHY I COACH: "As a training and development specialist by trade, I love to be a part of an individual’s growth in their knowledge, skill, and ability in a specific area. Coaching volleyball allows me to both guide that development in youth and young adults, and also enjoy sharing the love of the game that I have with these athletes. I have been called ‘obsessed’ but firmly believe in Simon Sinek’s quote ‘Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.’ I do have a passion for this game and will always look forward to more learning and growth opportunities for years to come.”
