HOME LIFE: Jeff (middle named “Kawika”) grew up on the island of Maui. He was an avid bodyboarder, spear-diver, fisherman, and all around beach junkie.  He loves Hawaiian food and can make some pretty great snacks out of SPAM.  Jeff moved from Maui to Boise, Idaho, and attended Boise State University. He served for 22 years in the Air Force in a flying squadron. Jeff met his wife Shelley while playing volleyball and they have been married for 21 years. Jeff and Shelley have 3 girls, Mikayla, Makena, and Malia. They love long road trips as a family and they love to go fishing at Strawberry Reservoir.

EDUCATION: Jeff graduated from Boise State University.  He also earned a Master’s Degree from AMU in Charles Town, WV. where he studied Sport Management with an emphasis in Coaching Theory and Strategy.  Additionally, Jeff earned his volleyball coaching CAP Level III education from USA Volleyball, under the tutelage of USAV’s National Team coaches and cadre.

VOLLEYBALL CAREER: Jeff started playing volleyball in junior high and high school in Hawaii. He also played as a setter on the Boise State men’s’ club team while attending BSU. After joining the Air Force, Jeff had the unique opportunity play on an Italian pro team in Caldogno, Italy while stationed in Vicenza with NATO in 1998. Jeff still loves to play and he participates in city leagues and outdoor grass tournaments whenever he can. Jeff always took a volleyball with him on his overseas travels and has had the opportunity to play volleyball, as a form of goodwill, with local nationals from all over the world.

COACHING CAREER: Jeff began coaching volleyball in 2002 in Boise. He was a traveling national club team coach and led his teams to many USAV national qualifier tournaments. Jeff served as a volunteer assistant coach at Boise State and worked as a camp staff coach for several college volleyball camps. He has coached for USAV’s High Performance program at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and also coached the Air Force Women’s Armed Forces team to a Gold Medal in 2012 and a Silver Medal in 2009.  Jeff was selected to head coach the Team USA CISM Women’s team in 2012, and trained and competed in the Netherlands, competing against Brazil, China, Germany, Greece, Sri-Lanka, Canada, and the Dutch Women’s National Team.  Jeff moved from Idaho to Utah in 2015 and has served as a 6A Region 1 head volleyball coach and volleyball official in Utah.

WHY I COACH: “I became a volleyball coach as a way to give back to the game that has given me so much.  Through my involvement in volleyball I have met many great people from all over the world and have made many life long friends. Coaching gives me an opportunity to give back and to serve those who choose to gear up and step onto the court in the greatest game in the world.”
