MARISA HURD

ASSISTANT COACH
2 YEARS COACHING EXPERIENCE

HOME LIFE:  I grew up in Layton Utah. Something unique about me is that I am a triplet! I came up to Utah State for school and met my husband Taven, my junior year. We were married the following August. We both have fallen in love with Cache Valley and want to stay here forever. We live in North Logan. My husband is completing his masters degree and I teach. In my spare time I love spending time with friends and family, enjoying the outdoors, crafting, and playing volleyball whenever I have the chance!

EDUCATION: I graduated from Northridge High school in 2016. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Utah State with degrees in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education in the Spring of 2020. This is my 2nd year teaching 1st grade at North Park Elementary.

VOLLEYBALL CAREER: I started playing volleyball when I was 12. I was a setter. My sister also played, and she was an outside hitter. It was so fun to have that “connection” with her on and off the court. I played at several different clubs, and ended my club career at Club V. I played for Northridge High School. My senior year we won our region. That year I was also a member of Deseret News 5A 1st Team All State and led 5A in both aces and assists. I also played sand and grass volleyball. In 2014 when the AVP came to Salt Lake City, my sister and I won our age group in the youth sand portion of the AVP tour. I think playing in the sand is a great way to improve your all around indoor game! I came up to Utah State in the Fall of 2016 and started playing in a volleyball class. I played on coed and girls intramural teams and as well on the women’s club team at Utah State.

COACHING CAREER: I have helped coach both outdoor and indoor skill clinics in Davis County. I have also helped to coach setters for my former high school coach. I am excited to help coach this season as an assistant coach!

WHY I COACH: I coach volleyball because I love the game! I want others to come to love it and experience the joy that it brings when your hard work pays off. I love the pace, the skills, the team work, and work ethic that the sport brings. I also love teaching kids! It is so fun to watch the growth and skills that come after hours of practice. I am excited to share my love and passion for the game with those that I coach!

VOLLEYBALL IDOL: Airial Salvo-Sprague, Brenda Barton Whicker, My sister, Whitney Bower

FAVORITE QUOTE: “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do."
